Andrew Kremer to coach Guerin Catholic football
New leader brings experience as a coach at Lawrence North, Fishers and Chatard
By Ted Schultz
The Noblesville Ledger When Andrew Kremer first learned of the football coaching opening at Guerin Catholic, he was intrigued by the thought of becoming a head coach. But when Kremer, who spent the past two years as special teams coordinator at Lawrence North, visited Guerin, he knew it was the right place for him. The former Bishop Chatard football and baseball standout formally was introduced Tuesday as the Golden Eagles' new coach. "First and foremost, I think that it's the Catholic identity and the faith formation that goes on up here and just the community involvement with everybody that's involved and all the people around this place," Kremer said. "Initially, it was just the idea of being a head coach was why I was attracted to it, but then once I got to know the community and came up here a few times and got to know some of the people, that was the real excitement for me." Kremer replaces Mark Weller, who started the Guerin program in 2004. Weller resigned after going 13-21 in three varsity seasons, including a program-best 5-6 last fall. Before coaching at LN, Kremer was the defensive coordinator at Fishers in 2006 and at Chatard in 2004-05. He coached wide receivers, defensive backs and linebackers from 2000-03 at his alma mater, where he also was the head baseball coach for four years. Kremer, who played for former Noblesville coach and current LN offensive coordinator Craig Barr at Chatard, went on to play baseball at St. Joseph's and finished his teaching degree at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. He currently teaches freshman English at LN and said he will know in about a month if he will be teaching at Guerin in the fall. "I'm very excited," Kremer said. "I'm ready to get to work. I feel like we have a good plan, and I'm ready to get to work with these kids and am real excited to be here." Kremer met with returning players Tuesday morning and parents that night. "I got a couple videotapes last weekend when I first found out I was getting the job and put some hours in this weekend watching those," Kremer said. "I feel really good about some of the guys that are coming back. I think there's a real good core of players to work with, and there's a couple of real good seniors that are going to be able to lead us, so I'm real excited about who we have coming back. There's a lot of good football players in next year's junior class." That includes quarterback Andrew Godfrey, who threw for nearly 1,700 yards and 16 touchdowns as a sophomore. He'll have two of his top targets back in Stephen Haas and Andrew Hall, although Kremer said it will be important to build a solid running game to control the clock. "I can't tell you wins and losses, but I can tell you that we're going to commit ourselves to getting better every day and consistently reaching our potential," he said. "We're going to make sure that we become a team in every sense of the word, and of course, one of our goals is to have fun." Copyright 2009 Indianapolis Star. All rights reserved
