Former Chatard star hope to finish on high note

Jimmy Scheidler has twice played on the infamous blue turf at Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho, as a member of the Bowling Green football team.

The Bishop Chatard High School graduate is confident this next experience will be a bit better, starting with the fact the Falcons won't be facing nationally ranked Boise State.

"What makes it confusing is that when you play Boise out there, they have those blue jerseys on blue turf," said Scheidler, a senior tight end and team captain. "We got confused watching them on video."

Bowling Green (7-5) plays Idaho (7-5) in the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise on Dec. 30. It will be the final game of his college career for Scheidler, who earned second-team All-Mid-American Conference honors.

"I kind of want to go out the right way, winning this bowl game so I don't have a bitter taste in my mouth the rest of my life," Scheidler said with a laugh.

Just getting to a bowl was quite an accomplishment. Bowling Green, which had been one of the MAC's best teams the first part of the decade, fired coach Gregg Brandon after last season and hired Tennessee offensive coordinator Dave Clawson to replace him.

Scheidler admits he wasn't thrilled with a coaching change before his senior season, but he was determined to make the best of it. He got further incentive to do so when he was named a team captain.

"One thing we told the younger guys is to buy into what (the coaching staff) is doing," he said. "They know what they're talking about. You've got to trust them. Only way we're going to win."

Bowling Green started 1-4, including losses at Missouri and Marshall and a home loss to the aforementioned Boise State. But they won six of their last seven games to earn a bowl berth, with the only loss in that stretch to eventual MAC champion Central Michigan.

Scheidler would like to get a chance to play professionally, but he isn't counting on it. He graduated from Bowling Green on Friday night with a business administration degree and plans to attend law school.

Bowling Green also has received contributions from freshman defensive end Chris Jones (Brownsburg), who has 24 tackles in 12 games. Jones has one quarterback sack and one recovered fumble.
