Bishop Chatard
3A Champs aim high
Loss of 11 starters doesn't stop players' dreams of a repeat

Bishop Chatard's football team has to replace 11 starters from a squad that went 14-1 while winning its fourth Class 3A state title in seven years. The Trojans also must make up more than 3,100 yards rushing provided by running backs Joe Holland and Tyler Kleinschmidt. And head coach Vince Lorenzano admits this edition isn't as fast as previous Chatard teams. But none of those factors has the Trojans lowering their expectations this fall. "Every year we try to put on a new legacy on every class," said Chatard senior linebacker John Dury. "We're definitely trying to win another championship. If you don't win a state championship at Chatard, then you're a forgotten class. It's definitely in the backs of our minds, and we want to be (in the RCA Dome) on Nov. 24." Lorenzano isn't thinking that far ahead. "That's pretty much the farthest thing from our mind," he said. "Last year was last year, and this year is this year." In addition to Holland and Kleinschmidt, the offense must replace five other starters on offense. Dury said it's up to the defense -- which returns seven starters -- to help out the offense early on. "I know we're returning a lot of guys, and it's our job to help the offensive guys to feel confident," Dury said. "We want to go out and create some turnovers and maybe even score. We haven't scored a lot on defense in the past." Dury made a team-high 112 tackles a year ago, including nine for loss and six sacks. Fellow linebacker Mike Dum was right behind Dury with 109 tackles and seven sacks. The Trojans also return cornerback Kyle Dietrick, who had 58 tackles and led the Trojans with six interceptions. Noseguard Graham Wilkerson (58 tackles, 16 for loss, eight sacks) also is back up front, along with defensive end Zach Martin and defensive backs Dan Kleinschmidt and Steve Valdiserri. Dan Kleinschmidt played fullback a year ago, averaging more than eight yards per carry. He'll move to tailback, while Ari Pappas is expected to get a lot of time at tailback, too. "We're hoping he'll give us a little 'oomph,' " Lorenzano said. "I think we should be OK at tailback." Quarterback Rob Doyle was efficient a year ago, completing 66 of 121 passes for 1,115 yards and 15 touchdowns while throwing just three interceptions. But only two offensive linemen -- Martin and Greg Specht -- return. "We're probably going to feel more comfortable throwing the ball more this year," Lorenzano said. "We still want to be able to run the offense that we do, but our offensive line depth is an issue."
