Bishop Chatard 21, Roncalli 8
Field position boosts Trojans
Star correspondent
Bishop Chatard relied on a first-quarter advantage in field position and a lengthy fourth-quarter drive to hold on for a 21-8 win Friday over rival Roncalli at Broad Ripple High School. The Class 3A No. 4 Trojans (2-1) looked like they were in control early over the Rebels (0-3). Chatard forced Roncalli into a three-and-out on the Rebels' first series on offense and inherited the ball at its own 47-yard line after the Roncalli punt went just 18 yards. The Trojans got to work, moving 53 yards on six plays with senior quarterback Rob Doyle connecting with a diving Steve Valdiserri on a 22-yard pass play for their first touchdown. Roncalli forced Chatard into a three-and-out on the Trojans' second series, but Chatard caught a break on its punt try when the snap was high, punter Kyle Dietrick pulled the ball in, avoided the Roncalli rush and got away a high kick that was downed at the Roncalli 2. Two plays later, the Trojans took a 9-0 lead with senior lineman Graham Wilkerson tackling Roncalli running back Ben Polizzi in the end zone for a safety. Chatard took over at the Rebels' 39 after the free kick and needed just six plays to find the end zone, with senior tailback Dan Kleinschmidt pounding it in from the 2 to make it 15-0. "They were on our half of the field really the entire half just about. We had a couple mistakes there that set them up and they capitalized on those opportunities," said Roncalli coach Bruce Scifres, whose team cut the Chatard lead to 15-8 in the second quarter on an 11-yard end-around run by Tyler Peterson and Polizzi's two-point conversion. Chatard made it 21-8 with an eight-play, 70-yard drive in the third, with a scrambling Doyle finding Dietrick on a 16-yard touchdown pass. The Rebels refused to quit, however. Roncalli mounted a 12-play, 57-yard drive that came up short after the Rebels fumbled a pitch from quarterback Kevin Banich to Polizzi on fourth-and-goal from the 3 with 7:38 remaining. Chatard recovered and Kleinschmidt took the subsequent handoff 68 yards, forcing the Rebels to burn their final timeout. Chatard was able to run valuable minutes off the clock down the stretch. "We knew with two scores they were in a difficult situation," said Chatard coach Vince Lorenzo. "Once (Kleinschmidt) broke that run, I think that set us up to run the clock down and that's what we did." Doyle finished 10-of-11 passing for 147 yards with two touchdowns. Kleinschmidt added 116 yards rushing on 17 carries. Polizzi had 105 yards on 25 carries. "Our defense stepped up those first couple series and put us in great positions," Doyle said. "We were lucky enough to capitalize on offense once we got the ball." Roncalli is 0-3 for the first time since 2003. The Rebels went on to reel off 12 straight wins that year en route to the 4A state title.
