It took 48 hours for Anne Boese to decide to spend the next four years at a school she hadn't heard of previously.
The Bishop Chatard guard's mother set up an official visit in September at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, and Boese admits she wasn't happy about making the trip. But from the campus to the players to the coaches, Boese felt comfortable, and she committed two days later.
"I wasn't too thrilled about going, but I went along and love it," said Boese, who also considered Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and the University of Indianapolis. "I'd never heard of it, (but) I just got along so well with the girls, and that was the most important thing to me. I'm a real shy person at first, but they were so welcoming. I could see myself there."
Boese is second on Class 3A No. 4 Bishop Chatard in scoring (17 points per game) and assists (three), and earned a spot on The Indianaplis Star's city honor team as a junior after averaging 17.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.5 steals.
Caroline Schutzman, the Trojans' heading scorer (22) and rebounder (10), has committed to Indianapolis.
"What (Anne) brings is an ability to score," said Bishop Chatard coach Kevin Sweeney of the 5-foot-10 guard. "She can hit the 3 from all over the court. There (are) a lot of players that are good from the top or good from the corner. She can hit from the top, the wing, the corner. She can also put the ball on the floor and score as well."
The Fort Wayne team set the program's Division I victory record with 12 in coach Chris Paul's second season, equaling its totoal from 2004-05 and '05-06. Boese's skills will be a good fit for the Mastodons, who were 66th in the nation in 3-pointers per game last season at 5.4.They are 4-4 this season, including 2-0 in the Summit Conference.
"We are thrilled to have Anne join our basketball team for the 2008-2009 season," Paul said in a news release. "Not only is she an excellent basketball player, but she is an excellent student."
"They're a small school that's growing and, I think, in a few years they'll be a big name," said Boese, who has a 3.87 grade-point average and is a member of National Honor Society and the St. Luke Catholic Church Youth Ministry, and participated in Model United Nations. "I'm really excited about that."
