High School Football Class 3A Regional: Bishop Chatard (9-3) vs. Danville (11-1)
Same actors, different stage
Chatard-Danville annual rivalry moves to regional; both sides focus on own strengths

Defeating the Danville Warriors in sectional -- and ultimately ending their season -- has become almost as customary for Bishop Chatard as senior night and homecoming games. For six years, the Warriors have been just a speed bump for the Trojans on their road to six sectional, six regional, five semistate and four state titles. Again the Trojans are in a position to end the Warriors' season, only with the tournament realignment, their date is in the regional rather than sectional. The teams face off at 7 p.m. today at Broad Ripple High School. While the string of season-ending losses will be on the minds of Danville, Chatard coach Vince Lorenzano -- whose team is ranked second in Class 3A -- is not worrying about the No. 5 Warriors' desire for retribution. He's just concentrating on his game plan. "You know, we really don't worry what they're thinking about. We're just worried about ourselves and that we're doing what we're supposed to do," he said. "Our thing is that we've got to get better with each game, each play, each week." Danville Coach Terry Siddall made a point to talk with his team about the history between the two teams. "I don't think you can not talk about it," he said. "You have to deal with it. You have to understand (the Trojans) have been a nemesis. They've eliminated us several years in a row. "The bottom line is we have to do this year what we do. We have to try to play to our strengths and capitalize on the things we can capitalize on. Just like they're going to try and capitalize on the things they think will be advantageous to them." In the last four seasons, Chatard has defeated Danville by nearly 30 points a contest. Tonight's game should be more competitive. Danville (11-1) lost its first game, then won 11 straight, including last week's 40-20 win over Brebeuf Jesuit to claim the Sectional 21 title. "They've got a lot of skilled guys, and they've got a really good quarterback," said Lorenzano of Danville's Colton Cooper, who's thrown for 2,419 yards and 25 touchdowns. "This will be the fourth time we've seen him." The Trojans (9-3) will look to their defense to stop the explosiveness of Danville's offense, which scored 27 or more points in all but two games. "I think it's going to be important that we take care of the football, and it's going to be important that we play real physical," Lorenzano said. "It'll be important that we come out and hit hard and tackle well. If we do those things, good things are going to happen." Bishop Chatard got to the regional by way of a 13-10 victory over Hamilton Heights. To get a regional victory, the Trojans will look to continue to do what has worked for them all season. "We try to run the ball, and we've thrown the ball a little more this year than in past years. We've got a solid quarterback (Rob Doyle), and he's thrown for over 1,300 yards and 15 touchdowns," he said. "We feel comfortable with him throwing it. We feel we can do both of those things. We just have to execute our stuff and block, and we'll be all right."
