Trojans use early games as training
Getting ready for City Tournament is goal

With a total of two outside practices in more than a month prior to Monday and a 24-2 victory against an overmatched opponent the only game, Bishop Chatard High School softball coach Pat Miles admits he doesn't have a good feel for his team yet.

He will, however, after tonight.

"The best part about it is it'll gauge where we're at," Miles said of the game at 5 p.m. today at Cathedral. "We'll look at the game and see what we have to improve. Most teams haven't been outside (much) either. I like that we'll be able to gauge ourselves and prepare for the City Tournament (which starts April 26).

"That's our major goal right now."

With good weather expected Monday and Tuesday, Miles was looking forward to holding a couple of intense practices after several members of the team were out of town last week for spring break. Despite the limited work outdoors, Miles has been pleased with pitchers Amy Coutz, who returns from last season, and sophomore Molly Kilbane.

"We're going to take advantage of the decent weather, get outside, juggle people around and see what they can do," Miles said. "We'll be using these first couple of games as spring training, to see how the girls have developed and look at our new players. Both pitchers looked good (against Broad Ripple) and we seem to be putting the ball in play.

"I'd like to say I know more, but we have enough experience to be OK."
