Attaining a new level of success is usually an intangible concept for a high school girls basketball team. Bishop Chatard (20-4), however, will be able to see, hear, feel, almost touch what it's striving for against Rushville (15-8) at 10 a.m. today in the semifinals of the Class 3A Mount Vernon Regional. Greensburg (13-9) and Western Boone (19-3) play at noon, with the winners meeting in the championship at 8 p.m. The Trojans established themselves as one of the area's best teams by winning three sectionals the past four seasons -- only Heritage Christian (four) and Ben Davis (three) also accomplished that feat -- but have yet to reach a regional championship and establish themselves at the state level. Rushville has won a record 25 sectionals, and its nine regional titles are tied for sixth-most. "From the start, Rushville has been one of the best, if not the best, program," said Bishop Chatard coach Kevin Sweeney. "Their fans are tremendous. A lot of girls grow up wanting to be Lions. We're trying to build tradition, and I think we've done a good job, but we're infants in comparison to Rushville." Five Rushville players average from 8.1 to 11.3 points. Bishop Chatard uses a 10-player rotation led by seniors Anne Boese (21.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists), Caroline Schutzman (21.0 points, 10.4 rebounds) and Megan Gardner (10.0 points, 9.3 assists), and junior Kourtney Crawford (5.3 points, 7.1 rebounds). The Trojans wore down Northwest and Roncalli in the sectional but will not be able to take advantage of Rushville in that manner. Western Boone is making its first regional appearance since 1996, and Greensburg won its first sectional. Western Boone relies on defense (allowing 34.6 points per game, sixth in the state) and a balanced attack. Greensburg is led by senior point guard Taylor Hunter, a four-year starter who holds the school's assist records.
