High School Boys Basketball Sectional Preview
In a tough sectional, draw may be moot

It's a good thing the Bishop Chatard High School boys basketball team is finally healthy, because its sectional draw might make it sick.
The Trojans, just over a teamwide bout with the flu, will open with Howe, No. 21 in the state according to the Sagarin ratings, at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Beech Grove Sectional. Chatard would face No. 39 Beech Grove or No. 56 Roncalli in the semifinals and likely find No. 26 Northwest waiting in the championship game if it advances.
Bishop Chatard is 63rd in the Sagarin ratings -- it would be the top-rated team in seven of the 15 other 3A sectionals -- giving Beech Grove five teams in the top 16 in 3A. No other sectional has more than two.
"This year, we didn't care who we drew," coach Chris Quinn said, considering that the sectional also includes Brebeuf, No. 171, the second-best lowest-rated team for a 3A sectional. "Any of those five teams would be a tough game. We were going to have to beat the best team in the sectional (for the title), we might as well start off with them."
The Trojans were 12-2 after scoring the final 11 points in a 61-55 victory over 4A No. 6 Cathedral on Jan. 29 but then were hit by the flu. Jimmy and Billy Kennedy played in a 64-52 loss to Roncalli but shouldn't have, according to Quinn. Following a 65-56 loss to Anderson, four players missed a week of school, and Bishop Chatard lost to Tech, 58-56, without two starters and two reserves. Another starter played sick.
The Trojans had almost the entire roster healthy last week and went 2-0, and Quinn expects to have everybody available for Thursday's game against Northwest. Quinn has been using the past two weeks to try to re-establish the team's ball movement after it suffered with the inconsistent practice opportunities caused by the illnesses.
"I think we've got it back together," Quinn said. "That will get a big test on Thursday."
