Prep Prime Time with Anne Boese
Anne Boese's name will forever be synonymous with Bishop Chatard girls basketball after she led her team to the best season in school history. The 5-10 senior guard averages 21 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Trojans, who won the school's first girls basketball semistate Saturday. Chatard previously won its first sectional during Boese's freshman year, and three of four during her career.
Q: Your coach, Kevin Sweeney, described you as the type of player who would go out and shovel the snow off the pavement so you could go shoot outside. Tell me about your love of basketball.
A: I remember many AAU tournaments, one in particular, where we had lost a game by about two. Later that night, I went outside about midnight and played in the pitch black 'til about 1 (a.m.). I just love the game so much. It's my favorite thing to do.
Q: Your coach also said you're a little bit too unselfish. How have you gotten your shot more this season?
A: I think . . . I've learned my role as a shooter this year and coach always says, 'If you are open, shoot it.' I definitely think this year I've learned that and used that to the best of my ability.
Q: You're a very good student. What is your favorite subject?
A: This year, English. It's not just grammar and learning about books, it's more like history of literature and learning about the Greeks and Romans, and for some reason I find that really interesting. I'm also into math a lot. I really like math. I'm not too great at it, but it's my favorite subject.
Q: Tell us a little bit about your off-the-court activities.
A: Since I don't have a job -- it's hard to get a job during basketball and especially playing AAU I never really have time for a job -- so I do a lot of babysitting for my neighbors and I've babysat for coach a few times because he has a lot of kids now (four in three years). Every summer, me and my friend, we do some service hours with my parish, St. Luke. We go and distribute boxes to each classroom for their textbooks and stuff. I just like helping out and getting whatever money I can get besides a job.
Q: I know you're going to IPFW on a basketball scholarship, congratulations on that. Tell me about their mascot and what exactly that is?
A: I get that a lot -- everybody asks me 'What's their mascot?' -- and I say 'They're the Lady Mastodons.' " That's kind of like a wooly mammoth. The story behind that is on campus in Fort Wayne, where they built the campus, they found mastodon bones from a long, long time ago, ancient times, and that's how they got the nickname 'The Mastodons.' It's pretty fun to tell everybody that story. It's kind of cool.
