The Bishop Chatard and Northwest girls basketball teams combined for 41 turnovers Friday night. They committed 41 fouls. Their highly anticipated Beech Grove Sectional semifinal had all the rhythm of a symphony orchestra of kindergarteners, taking nearly two hours to play. And it was fun . . . for Chatard. "Bishop Chatard is a fun place to play," coach Kevin Sweeney said following his team's 70-63 victory. "We run up and down, so even if you're the eighth, ninth, 10th player, you're going to play a lot. Our depth was what won the game for us. Our depth wore them out, and we had fresh legs at the end (of each half). You get a little tired for a minute-and-a-half, we're going to try to make you pay. "It was fun, but it was hard on me." The fifth-ranked Trojans will play Roncalli (11-9), a 56-44 winner over Beech Grove, at 7:30 tonight for the sectional title. Chatard defeated Roncalli 76-57 on Jan. 16. The Trojans never had won a sectional title prior to Sweeney's arrival four seasons ago but will be playing for its third in his tenure. It earned that opportunity because it could bring Nikki and Rachel Kimack and Katie Shaughnessy off the bench for at least nine minutes apiece, keeping the starters out of foul trouble and their legs fresh. Northwest has one of Indianapolis' most talented starting lineups, including Division I-caliber players in Larretha Draughn, Talaya Earls and Triana Moore, but little depth. The Space Pioneers (16-6) led 16-11 a minute into the second quarter when Earls, Draughon and Mahogany Childs each picked up a second foul within two minutes. Bishop Chatard (18-4) took advantage as Anne Boese (20 points) sparked a 13-2 run with three 3-pointers and the Trojans were able to stretch the lead to 33-23, though Moore hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to close within seven. Northwest cut the deficit to 47-45 early in the fourth quarter on a 16-foot jumper by Draughon, but Draughon, Earls and Childs each had four fouls by that point. Chatard was able to run off nine straight points to push the lead to 56-45. Northwest closed to within 65-59 with less than three minutes to play on an offensive rebound by Moore and then forced a turnover, but Cierra Dotson's 3-pointer missed. Caroline Schutzman later hit 1-of-2 free throws and Kourtney Crawford made two free throws with 45.6 seconds remaining to clinch the win. "We always love the close games," said Schutzman, who finished with a game-high 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds. "We love pulling it out and taking a win. It was fun for everyone." In the second game, Natalie Cahill scored 12 points to lead Roncalli, which scored the first 12 points against Beech Grove. Sharnita Thomas paced the Hornets (6-14) with 12 points.
