The Arlington and Broad Ripple high school boys basketball teams were on the same basketball court Tuesday, this time without violence breaking out around them.
Arlington fell to Tech 57-50, and Broad Ripple lost to Bishop Chatard 66-63 in overtime Monday night in first-round games of the 69th City Tournament.
The games came four days after Arlington's 53-50 victory at Broad Ripple was stopped three times by fights in the stands, twice leading to players being taken to the locker room. After Friday's game, gunfire broke out in the area, and three people were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to police reports.
Tuesday's City Tournament games came off without incident.
"What happened at home was ridiculous," said Broad Ripple senior center Robert Goff, who had 14 points and 14 rebounds in the defeat. "That should never happen. It was nice to go on the road and play a game in a neutral setting."
For Tuesday's games, metal detectors were set up at the entrance at Tech High School, and all spectators had to pass through them.
"We thought we might need them because of some things going on," Tech athletic director Frank Craig said. He said metal detectors have been used in past City Tournaments.
The Arlington-Broad Ripple game normally draws a full house.
"We like playing the Broad Ripple game right before the City Tournament because it's always packed and always kind of rowdy, but you don't have the stuff that happened," Arlington coach Larry Nicks said.
Without any disruptions in the stands, fans Tuesday were treated to a pair of tight games.
In the opener, Jimmy Kennedy went 6-for-6 from the foul line in the final 11/2 minutes of overtime for Class 3A No. 8 Chatard. Broad Ripple was up 61-60 when Goff scored with 42.9 seconds to play, but Chatard's Daryn Hightower slammed a rebound dunk.
Goff was called for his fifth foul on a charge, and 10 seconds later Kennedy made two free throws, putting Chatard up 64-61. Broad Ripple's Khirie Williams hit a driving layup with 1.9 seconds to play, and Kennedy added two free throws.
Hightower led four Trojans in double figures with 15 points, 13 rebounds and three steals. Kennedy added 15 points, Taylor Wayer scored 13 and Pat Kennedy had 11.
Williams led Broad Ripple with 16 points. Eric Wilson had 11 and Howard Stevenson 10.
In the second game, Anthony Young had 23 points and 15 rebounds to lead Tech. The 6-6 senior scored 12 points in the third quarter and six in the fourth when the Titans outscored Arlington 10-3. The Knights had only five free throws during the final 4:11.
"I should have been in the post more," said Young, who went 1-for-5 from 3-point range. "My coach has been telling me I fell in love with the 3-point shot. We didn't really play all that well, and we know we have to bring it Thursday against Howe if we want to get a win."
