Chatard regroups, sees progress
Trojans trying to stay healthy so coach is giving them more time off to prepare for stretch run and the sectionals

No one is happy after a three-game losing streak.
But Bishop Chatard girls basketball coach Kevin Sweeney was satisfied with the progress his team demonstrated last week when it ended its slide with an 82-37 victory over Scecina on Friday.
"Things are falling in line," he said.
That's an improvement over last year when the Trojans were just falling.
Bishop Chatard was 13-3 at this point last season, a game better than its current record. It had already lost one of its top players, Kelly Gardner, to a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Then Caroline Schutzman suffered an ankle injury that all but ended her season, and Anne Boese got sick the week of sectionals. The Trojans finished 4-3 and failed to win a sectional for the first time under Sweeney.
"We're trying to stay away from (injuries)," said Sweeney, whose team plays at Roncalli (8-6) at 7:30 p.m. today. "I've given this team more days off to stay fresh and get away from basketball than in the past. I think that's helped a little bit. We're giving them a little more rest."
Bishop Chatard, ranked fifth in Class 3A, also is working on developing its depth around Schutzman, Boese and point guard Megan Gardner.
Courtney Crawford, the team's leading rebounder, and Rachel Kimack, a defensive specialist, have filled key roles. Freshmen Katie Shaughnessy and Nikki Kimack, Rachel's sister, reached double figures in scoring against Scecina, and can provide rebounding off the bench.
"We're not where we want to be but we're right in line to get there," Sweeney said. "The main thing is, we're healthy."
