Late-season surge gives Bishop Chatard optimism

The Bishop Chatard High School softball team's 11-15 record doesn't tell the true story of the season.

After starting 4-10, the young Trojans avenged a loss to Cathedral to reach the City Tournament championship game for the second time in three years, then beat a Brebeuf Jesuit team it lost to during the season to reach the sectional semifinals.

"The record doesn't indicate the type of season we had," said coach Pat Miles. "We're still young, and we're bringing back nine starters."

Bishop Chatard loses seniors Lyndi Kunkel, the starting second baseman, and reserve Katie Doyle, but has experience returning at every position. Leading the veterans next season will be rising sophomore shortstop Casey Williamson, who hit above .400 and led the team in triples, runs, RBIs and stolen bases.

Third baseman Kim Tyler hit above .400, led the team in doubles and ranked second in triples, runs and RBIs. First baseman Kelly Tekulve hit .387 with 13 RBIs and 12 runs in 19 games. The Trojans also return pitchers Amy Coutz and Molly Kilbane; Coutz emerged as the top starter, but they shared time in the circle.

Several players are affiliated with travel teams, and Miles has teamed up with Cardinal Ritter to give the schools' younger, less-experienced players an opportunity to play over the summer.

"Obviously our expectations are to win the City, the sectional and then see what we can do in the playoffs," Miles said. "We had five new starters this season, but we'll have (nearly) everybody coming back with another year of experience. Everybody's expectations are pretty high."
