Chatard copes with frustration

A fast start . . . a quicker end. The senior-dominated Bishop Chatard High School boys basketball team got off to a school-record 10-0 start, lost five of its next seven when several players got sick and seemed to be back on track when it won four straight heading into its sectional semifinal. For the second straight year, Beech Grove ended the Trojans' season in overtime. "It's very frustrating," said coach Chris Quinn. "We had been building to this season with this senior class, but that's athletics. We had a winning streak to finish out . . . when (starters) Billy and Pat Kennedy got sick again at the Beech Grove game. "The tale of our season was that the injuries and sickness all seemed to happen at the wrong time, but those are the things you have to deal with as you go through a long season." Bishop Chatard experienced highlights that included the early winning streak, beating Jeffersonville to win its own holiday tournament and scoring the final 11 points to defeat rival Cathedral, 61-55, on Jan. 29. The Trojans lose leading scorers Jimmy Kennedy and Michael Zimmerman; top rebounder and fourth-leading scorer Daryn Hightower; and Billy Kennedy, Jimmy's twin brother. Returning will be sophomore Taylor Ware, who averaged 9.5 points; junior point guard Pat Kennedy, the team's assist leader; and reserves Devin Hucksold and Zach Martin. "It's very frustrating, but the positive is that we had a great group of kids," Quinn said. "They were fun and enjoyable to be around. We lose a lot of scoring and rebounding, but we have some quality kids coming up." Copyright 2008 IndyStar.com. All rights reserved
