Chatard senior has big day on IUPUI track

Kate Muskat had won some big meets before at IUPUI's Carroll Stadium, but Friday's performance in the All-Catholic meet might have surpassed them all.

The Bishop Chatard senior was part of four winning efforts and set meet records in the 100 meters (12.55 seconds) and the 200 (25.92). Muskat won the high jump at 5 feet and was on the winning 400-meter relay team.

"I'm familiar with this track," said Muskat, who recalled her grade school glory days of winning races for her Catholic Youth Organization team.

"It's fun setting records (now) just like I did when I was younger."

Chatard totaled 114 points to finish as the runner-up to Roncalli (164). Brebeuf Jesuit (91) was third, and Cathedral (77) fourth. Guerin (4) rounded out the seven-team field.

Muskat was excited, not only about getting the records, but also about her recovery from a hamstring injury last year that kept her out of the state meet. Muskat, a Broad Ripple resident, was a state finalist in the 100 and 200 in 2006 as a sophomore.

"It's like the first big meet for me where I can just go out there and see how I'm doing so far," Muskat said.

Chatard's Alex Metzger set a meet record in the pole vault at 10-6, and Carly Sobolewski won the 3,200.

Brebeuf's Joie Hand won the 400, and Chloe Holewinski won the long jump. The Braves also won the 1,600 relay.

Cathedral's Katy Achtien won the 1,600, and the Irish took first in the 3,200 and distance medley relays.
