Balanced scoring key for Guerin Catholic

Guerin Catholic High School boys basketball coach Pete Smith raved about his team's balanced scoring in beating Bishop Chatard 78-62 in the final game of the Ivy Tech Holiday Classic at Conseco Fieldhouse on Saturday night . . . but had no idea he had five players score in double figures.

"Did we?" he said.

His team usually relies on two players -- Michael McMahon and Ryan Nowicki -- to score more than half of its points.

"Balanced scoring to me is how many points we're getting in the paint and the outside," he continued. "If one guy is getting 30 in the paint and one guy is getting 30 on the perimeter, that's balance to me. We had pretty good balanced scoring."

Class 2A No. 9 Guerin (5-1) finished with 26 points in the paint, 25 from the perimeter and 27 from the free throw line.

Lebanon beat Tri-West 51-44 in the event's opener. Lapel followed with a 62-41 victory over Tri-Central. Delta defeated Richmond 67-50 and Noblesville posted a 63-54 win over Hamilton Heights.

Guerin saw a 13-point first-half lead dwindle to a 48-48 tie with 2:19 left in the third quarter as Bishop Chatard (1-3) scored on four straight possessions, the last by Calvin White in the post. Smith called a timeout and his team responded with a 16-1 run that put the game out of reach.

"We talked in the timeout that we had to play stronger," Smith said. "We said, 'If you think you're not getting rebounds because it's physical, that's the way it's going to be called and you have to be more physical.' I thought Danny Town was a big key. He was blocking two people out for the ball."

Bradley Yust sparked the Guerin run, converting a three-point play out of the timeout for a lead his team would not relinquish.

Town and Riley Rapp each then hit a pair of free throws and Nowicki buried a 3-pointer to complete a 10-0 run for the Eagles.

After Bishop Chatard's Evan Huxhold hit 1-of-2 free throws, Nowicki and Town each made two free throws and Yust added a fast-break layup to make it 64-49.

Nowicki, averaging 22 points, was held to 17. Town added 14 points and eight rebounds; Yust 13 points and six assists; McMahon 11 points and 11 rebounds; and Jordan Rapp 10 points.
