Linemen pave way for Chatard's victory

Bishop Chatard High School offensive tackle Zach Martin's nose and cheeks were caked in mud but it only made his smile shine even more.

The offensive linemen for the Class 3A No. 1 Trojans were looking forward to a cool Friday night after two days of rain. The unit cleared the way for Ari Pappas to rush for 227 yards and five touchdowns on 42 carries in a 42-20 victory over No. 3 North Montgomery at Broad Ripple.

"We knew we were going to pound it and give it to Ari," said Martin, his team advancing to play at No. 5 Evansville Memorial likely at 7 p.m. Friday in the program's eighth straight semistate, though the schedule had not been finalized. "I don't mind the cold and it is fun to play in the mud."

Running behind Martin, Zach Hawkins, Drew Schmutte, Patrick Fagan and Kenny Andrews, with a hand from fullback Michael Adkins and tight end Garrett Arnold, Pappas carried on 42 of the team's first 49 plays and had touchdown runs of 2, 2, 9, 1 and 5 yards to build a 35-8 lead with 8:39 remaining. The touchdowns came over six possessions; Chatard failed to score only on an abbreviated drive at the end of the first half.

"Coach (Vince Lorenzano) told me we'd run it a lot," Pappas said. "The footing wasn't too bad, though the rain kept coming and coming and made it a little worse. But I feel I get better (the more I run the ball). I notice the tendencies of the defense and try to take advantage of it."

Bishop Chatard (11-1) took advantage of North Montgomery (12-1) committing turnovers on its first three drives. Quarterback Clayton Dale was intercepted by T.J. Agnew on the second drive to set up Chatard at North Montgomery's 31-yard line for Pappas' first touchdown. Daniel Hurrle then forced a Dale fumble and Luke Johnstone recovered at the North Montgomery 35 to give Pappas another short field.

On North Montgomery's first possession of the second half, lineman Eric Deitchman intercepted Dale and returned it 28 yards to the North Montgomery 12. North Montgomery had committed 21 turnovers this season entering the game.

"When you play the No. 1 team in the state, you can't give that team anything," North Montgomery coach Charley German said. "You can't give them a break any way, shape or form. The turnovers were probably the huge factor that really put us in a big hole and we just couldn't dig ourselves out."
