Good Volleyball on both sides in City Tourney

They only come out for championship games.

Cathedral High School volleyball coach Jean Kesterson was glad to unveil the team's white, long-sleeved uniform shirts Thursday night because she knew her team would need every edge to beat rival Bishop Chatard in the City Tournament final at Broad Ripple.

"It's the Irish volleyball player's dream to put on the white sleeves," said outside hitter Christiana Gray after her team rallied from a 22-19 deficit in Game 4 to beat Class 3A No. 6 Bishop Chatard 3-1 for the program's sixth consecutive City title and 14th overall...

The Trojans (23-8) took a 14-11 lead in the first game, but Cathedral came out of a timeout and went on a 9-3 run before finishing out the 25-19 victory. The 4A No. 1 Irish looked like they wouldn't need the shirts in the second game, taking a 22-12 lead, but Bishop Chatard set the tone for the final two sets with a flurry that closed the deficit to 23-16 before Cathedral closed it out.

Bishop Chatard led the third game 23-18 when the Irish battled back to get within 23-22 and 24-23, but the Trojans held on for a 25-23 victory. They again controlled most of the fourth game, but Cathedral ran off five straight points after falling behind 22-19, and Gray scored the final two points for the team's 19th consecutive victory.

"It was just great volleyball on both sides of the net," Bishop Chatard coach Larry Leonhardt said. "We haven't played on a Thursday night in the City since 2004; it's fun to be here. You don't want to lose, but if you're going to, at least you go down swinging, digging and playing a good game against a good team.

"It's one of those you say, 'We proved something to ourselves.' "

Though Cathedral (24-2) lost just its second game during its winning streak -- Carmel snapped a 34-game winning streak on Sept. 30 -- Kesterson was pleased with the way her team pulled out the victory.

"At the very end, we're doing off-speed shots and hitting holes as opposed to pounding because (Bishop Chatard) was digging so well," she said. "A point's a point. Sometimes you just need to find a way to win."
