Often overlooked about this season's Heritage Christian high school girls basketball team is that it's not completely rebuilding after losing a senior class that led the program to four consecutive Class 2A state titles.

Friday night was a perfect example.

When the Eagles needed a steady, experienced hand, their lone senior stepped forward. With the score tied entering the fourth quarter of the City Tournament title game at Cathedral, Kaycee Jones shrugged off a 2-of-11 shooting performance to start the game. She scored on consecutive drives, then assisted on another basket to put the championship away.

"My shots weren't falling so I knew I had to do something else," said Jones, who finished the 48-41 victory over Bishop Chatard with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists. "I really just wanted to step up because I'm a senior and it had to start with somebody. I wanted to step up and give my team a push."

Heritage Christian became the first program to win five consecutive City championships, its sixth overall. Bishop Chatard has not won a title, finishing as the runner-up for the third time in four seasons and sixth overall.

Bishop Chatard (12-4) tied the score 35-35 on a fastbreak layup by Rachael Kimack and Katie Shaughnessy's drive at the buzzer to end the third quarter. But Jones cut to the basket and scored to put her team ahead to stay 15 seconds into the fourth quarter. She then scored on a drive and found Liz Stratman inside for a 41-35 edge, the biggest lead for either team in the game to that point.

"Kaycee was the difference," Heritage Christian coach Rick Risinger said. "You expect that from a senior. She put a lot of pressure on the defense (by driving to the basket). She rose to the occasion because we needed to get that lead to take control of the game. She did a great job with that."

Heritage Christian (9-7) held Bishop Chatard scoreless for the first 6:25 of the fourth quarter. The Eagles put Gabriella Bryant on Cathy Doyle, Bishop Chatard's leading scorer at 20 points per game, and Doyle was limited to two points on 1-of-10 shooting.

During most of the second half, Heritage Christian used the 6-2 Stratman as a one-person zone in the middle of the lane and had Bryant chase Doyle wherever she went, not switching on screens. The result was that Bishop Chatard shot 5-of-25 (20.0 percent), including 0-for-5 on 3-pointers, over the final 16 minutes.

"It feels real good," Risinger said when asked about adding another City championship to the trophy case. "This is a different team than what we had in previous years and I'm real proud of what they did in pulling off the City championship. It was important for the girls so I'm really proud of the effort they put in when we needed it."
