Two high school volleyball standouts who will be college teammates at Toledo next year have earned Indianapolis Star Player of the Year honors. City Player of the Year Becca Reidy of Bishop Chatard and County Player of the Year Lauren Rafdal of Class 3A state champ Brebeuf Jesuit recently signed to play for the Rockets after finishing stellar prep careers.

Chatard coach Larry Leonhardt and Brebeuf coach Brian Murray are the City and County Coaches of the Year, respectively. The All-City and All-County teams were determined by a vote of area coaches.

The 6-2 Reidy has been a mainstay in the middle for the Trojans. Prior to two sectional matches, she had 282 kills and a .294 hitting percentage with 50 aces, 261 digs, 41 block solos and 35 block assists.

"It really is remarkable, given the level of the competition that we play, that she has been able to be such an influence in matches for four years, from the time she was a freshman," said Leonhardt, who has coached Reidy since she was a seventh-grader at St. Lawrence. "The last two years, not only has she been a hub of our offense, but she has also taken on major serve-receive duties as well."

Leonhardt led the Trojans to a 22-12 record in his fourth year. Seventh-ranked Chatard lost to second-ranked Brebeuf in the Sectional 26 semifinals.

Rafdal, a 6-2 outside hitter, has earned first-team 3A All-State honors by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association three times and was a second-team All-State pick as a freshman. This season, she had a team-leading 364 kills while hitting .427 with 227 digs and 39.5 total blocks.

"Lauren was an incredibly consistent force for us all year," Murray said. "She was one of our two primary passers, was a tremendous offensive option and was one of our floor leaders. Lauren (along with our other captains) did a great job of leading by example and playing with a calmness about her I hadn't seen in her before."

Murray's Braves finished 34-1, beating top-ranked Yorktown in the state final to avenge their only loss of the season.
