Different setting, same scene.

For the second consecutive season, the No. 1 Bishop Chatard High School football team's season was ended in semistates by Evansville Memorial and quarterback Grant Gribbins, this time by the score of 37-21 at Tech on Saturday night. The ninth-ranked Tigers eliminated the Trojans 27-14 last season in Evansville. They will play No. 2 West Lafayette (14-0) at noon Saturday in Lucas Oil Stadium for the Class 3A state championship.

Gribbins, who played with a strained right thigh muscle suffered Tuesday while lifting weights, was 20-of-32 for 327 yards and accounted for all five of his team's touchdowns, rushing for one. In two years against Bishop Chatard, he completed 33-of-54 passes for 580 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for four scores.

"We knew we were going to have trouble with Gribbins," Bishop Chatard coach Vince Lorenzano said. "He was even hurt and he still gave us trouble. He's a Mr. Football candidate for a reason."

Bishop Chatard (12-2) took a 14-0 lead a little more than five minutes into the game as Ari Pappas (34 carries, 207 yards) carried the ball on nine of his team's first 10 plays, gaining 92 yards and scoring on 7- and 9-yard runs. Gribbins cut the deficit to 14-7 with a 5-yard pass to Steven Scheu with 3:27 to play in the first quarter and Evansville Memorial (11-3) stopped Bishop Chatard on fourth down from the 14- and 20-yard lines.

Gribbins cut the deficit to 14-13 on a quarterback sneak with 71 seconds left in the half -- the extra point was blocked. He then hit Eddie Reising for a 59-yard touchdown on a screen pass on the second play of the third quarter, the two-point conversion making it 21-14. A 56-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Stuckey pushed the lead to 28-14 with 6:53 to play in the third quarter.

Bishop Chatard looked like it would get right back in the game as quarterback George VanVliet converted a third-and-5 with a 10-yard pass to Joe Mark to the Evansville Memorial 34. Nolan Miller rushed for 20 yards and Pappas picked up a third-and-6 with a 9-yard run to the 1. On first-and-goal, however, Pappas fumbled into the end zone and Evansville Memorial recovered.

"Our opportunities were there," Lorenzano said. "If we score on the 1-yard line, it's a different game. If we score inside the 20 twice (in the first half), it's a different game. It's a tribute to (Evansville Memorial). They played better than us in the end. We made too many mistakes."

The Bishop Chatard defense forced a punt and VanVliet hit Garrett Arnold for a 32-yard gain to set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Ryan Kleinschmidt to make it 28-21 but Gribbins wouldn't give the Trojans another chance. He topped off a 58-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Wandling with 5:26 remaining to clinch the victory.

"The first half, we had control of the game and we lost it so quickly," Lorenzano said. "We made some mistakes. You can't fumble the ball. You can't give (Gribbins) opportunities. He's too good. He just got us."
