The Roncalli High School football team trailed Bishop Chatard by nine points when it took over at its own 20-yard line with 2:30 remaining. The game was, effectively, over. But you'd never have known it. Roncalli was throwing the ball all over the field in a desperate effort to catch up. Bishop Chatard coach Vince Lorenzano was fuming at the referees over every call. These rivals don't play just to win the game, but every drive. And when Bishop Chatard's Nick Schwartz made an interception at his 2 with 2.1 seconds left to finally clinch a 25-16 victory at Broad Ripple, the teams embraced. "There's a lot of pride involved here," Bishop Chatard coach Vince Lorenzano said. "It's just pride. These programs are tradition-rich. There's a never-quit attitude amongst these teams. You hate to see any team lose in games like this, when both are giving it everything they've got. It's a Catholic school kind of thing. "Never quit." It was a game full of mistakes and big plays. Class 3A No. 1 Bishop Chatard, which has won five consecutive games in the series, took a 10-0 lead into the locker room on a 42-yard field goal by Cody Dickson after Dan Hartley forced a fumble and Alex Bill recovered at the Roncalli 32-yard line with 12 seconds remaining in the half. The Trojans (3-0) then looked like they had put the game out of reach when Ari Pappas (29 carries, 226 yards, three touchdowns) covered 72 of the 75 yards on a touchdown drive, scoring from the 4 to make it 25-8 with 54.6 seconds remaining in the third quarter. But on the first play of the fourth quarter, Roncalli quarterback Tommy Young hit Brandon Banta for a 46-yard touchdown and Tyler Mohr ran it in for the conversion to make it 25-16. "We knew it was going to be a tough game," Lorenzano said. "They just beat the crap out of Franklin Central and beat Southport. The biggest thing is we were resilient enough to survive and finish the game." Class 4A No. 7 Roncalli (2-1) forced a three-and-out and drove to its 47, but Young threw incomplete, Hartley sacked Young, Bishop Chatard forced another incompletion and Drew McDonald broke up a pass to turn the ball over on downs. Nolan Miller converted a third-and-11 with an 11-yard run to the Roncalli 30 to effectively clinch the victory. But when Pappas was stopped an inch short of the first down with 2:30 left, Young (213 passing yards) drove his team 73 yards (87, including penalties). He completed four passes for 58 yards and rushed for 29 yards, including converting a fourth-and-19 with a 22-yard scramble, before throwing the interception with 2.1 seconds left. "Every time they passed you were like, 'Oh no,' " Pappas said. "It put the pressure on us. This game is always fun. They're a great rival. They're a tough team. Playing them is a privilege."
