Chatard girls advance to state finals
With 17 losses, the Bishop Chatard High School volleyball team seems like an unlikely participant in the state finals. Chatard advanced by beating host Jasper 22-25, 25-19, 25-12, 26-24 in a Class 3A semistate final Saturday night. The Trojans (21-17) will play 3A No. 1 Yorktown (36-2) in the state championship at 3 p.m. Saturday in Muncie. It is Chatard's first trip to the state championship since winning the 3A crown in 2004. "For this crew to make it is really neat to see because it's a little bit of Cinderella story," said Chatard coach Larry Leonhardt, who was an assistant in 2004. "We haven't played this level of games all the time, but I think the ingredients were there. It took awhile for it all to be put in place and for the kids to get confidence."
