It came down to the final minute Friday night but it was two big first-quarter plays that gave Bishop Chatard a 14-7 victory over Roncalli.

Roncalli (2-1) had fourth and goal in the closing seconds, but Chatard's Mike Dum sacked Roncalli quarterback Paul Corsaro with 6.4 seconds remaining to clinch the victory.

Chatard (3-0) capitalized early, recovering a fumble by Roncalli running back Chris Merkel. On Chatard's first play from scrimmage, running back Joe Holland rushed 87 yards for a score.

"Not to say I overlooked the first two games, but this game has been on my mind since summer workouts," Holland said after the game, mobbed by fans. Holland finished with 161 yards.

The Trojans' second big play was a 43-yard punt return by Corey Duggan that set up a 2-yard Holland touchdown run with just under three minutes to play in the first quarter.

"This was a typical Roncalli-Chatard game," Roncalli coach Bruce Scifres said of the standing-room only contest played at Broad Ripple. "It was very, very hard-fought and kids from both sides were hitting like crazy. We learned a very good lesson early; you can't give up two big plays early. Letdowns like that cannot be made against a great program like Chatard."

Despite running 21 plays compared to three by Chatard, Roncalli trailed 14-0 after the first quarter.

"Every once in a while the breaks fall your way," Chatard coach Vince Lorenzano said. "We held on by the skin of our teeth."

Roncalli strayed from its usual running-heavy style and Corsaro passed for 173 yards. He threw more passes in the first half than he had in Roncalli's first two games combined.

One of his passes hit Andy Barkocy for a 46-yard touchdown with 10:19 to go in the second quarter.

"When you give up two long runs like that the game plan changes, unfortunately," Scifres said. "Paul is a tremendous competitor and a great kid. He performed with great poise tonight."

Roncalli's Merkel rushed for 189 yards.
