Trojans win when Patriots gamble in OT
Bishop Chatard takes victory by stopping Heritage Hills' try for 2-point conversion
November 20, 2005
Bob Clayton had seen enough.
The Heritage Hills football coach -- and every person at Broad Ripple High's stadium -- knew Bishop Chatard would give the ball to tailback Joe Holland if the game went to a second overtime, and Clayton believed his team wouldn't be able to stop him.
So No. 2 Heritage Hills went for the two-point conversion after scoring on the second possession of the first overtime and Mike Dum tackled quarterback Jacob McGrew to clinch Bishop Chatard's 21-20 semistate championship victory.
The No. 4 Trojans will face NorthWood (8-6) at noon Saturday in the RCA Dome for the Class 3A state championship. Heritage Hills -- which has played the Trojans in semistates for five straight years -- eliminated Bishop Chatard 13-10 last season to end its three-year reign as state champion. It was a bad coaching call," Clayton said. "It's all on me. I should have probably kicked it. (But) the one thing we felt like was we couldn't continue to line up in overtime, giving them the ball at the 10-yard line. We overloaded (the toss sweep to Holland) and still couldn't do anything with it.
"We felt like they were going to get it in there."Bishop Chatard (12-2) was facing third-and-7 at its 8-yard line late in the third quarter when Holland rushed for 13 yards to pick up the first down. No one else touched the ball on the drive. The 6-2, 190-pound junior carried on 13 straight plays for 92 yards, with nearly every one a variation of a toss sweep with fullback Andrew Sullivan and quarterback Matt Lubbers leading the blocking. Holland converted a third-and-5 at the Heritage Hills 13, then took it into the end zone behind Sullivan and Lubbers for a 14-7 lead with 8:05 remaining in regulation.
"There's a couple of different variations, a couple of different formations, but more or less it's a toss sweep and I run inside or run outside," Holland said. ". . . The fullbacks did a great job leading and the offensive line did a great job making the holes. It started clicking in the second half."
Heritage Hills (12-2), which was missing leading rusher Jacob Nichols due to a back injury, drove 74 yards on the next possession and tied the score 14-14 on a 2-yard run by Nathan Schipp with 2:19 left in the fourth quarter. Bishop Chatard's final drive in regulation ended at the 50, but it took Holland just two plays to score in overtime, running right for an 8-yard TD. Holland ran the ball on 21 of Bishop Chatard's final 24 plays for 146 yards. He finished with 193 yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries.
"We run the football. He's our No. 1 back. That's what we do," Bishop Chatard coach Vince Lorenzano said. "Whether people like it or not, that's what we do. As simple-minded as I am, he's a really good player and I know where the ball needs to be."
Heritage Hills took just two plays to score in overtime as receiver Kyle Lambrick tipped and corralled a pass from McGrew and scored from 8 yards. McGrew rolled out looking to pass for the two-point conversion but had to pull the ball down. Dum made the tackle to clinch the victory and send Bishop Chatard to its eighth state title game."It was scary. They were going for it (and) we had to make a stop," Dum said. "I saw the quarterback boot out and I dropped back in my passing (lane). He tucked it, I saw him running and stepped up and tried to make a tackle. Everybody's been down on us all year (but) we knew we would step up and win."
