Warren Central senior Dexter Taylor and Bishop Chatard junior Joe Holland displayed outstanding ability in pacing their teams to the high school football state finals.
With both showing athleticism, determination and leadership skills, the pair have been chosen as Players of the Year for the respective 2005 All-Marion County and All-City teams, as selected by The Star.
Coaches from around the City and County nominated players from their teams for consideration. Once the lists of nominees were compiled, coaches could vote only for players from other teams. The results were the primary tool in the selection process.
"Dexter is one of those people who has 'it,' " Warren Central coach Kevin Wright said of Taylor, an option quarterback who finished with 2,116 yards and 29 rushing touchdowns while leading the Warriors (14-1) to their third consecutive Class 5A state championship.
"I really can't define what 'it' is, but Dexter has it. He's charismatic, he's talented and the huddle just isn't the same when he's not in it."
Chatard coach Vince Lorenzano had similar praise for Holland, a running back who rushed for 2,257 yards and 30 touchdowns in helping the Trojans (12-3) to a Class 3A state runner-up finish.
"Joe is one of those guys who's there all the time," Lorenzano said. "He's a good role model for the other kids; he's never too high or too low, and he gets things done. He has good talent, but his effort day in and day out, game by game, is what allows him to succeed."
Cathedral's Jim O'Hara and Decatur Central's Tim Able were chosen respective City and County Coaches of the Year.
O'Hara, a Cathedral graduate, guided the Irish to a 10-2 record that included a No. 2 ranking in Class 4A. Along the way, Cathedral had wins over rivals Bishop Chatard and Roncalli.
Able was recognized after his Hawks (10-3) claimed the first sectional title in program history.
