Whiteland and Bishop Chatard traded baskets for most of the first half during Tuesday night's second game in the Class 3A Whiteland Sectional. But in the faster-paced second half, the Warriors surged into the lead and held on for a 55-50 upset win. "This is the first time this year that we've gone ahead early, been down at the half (28-22) and came back in the third quarter," Whiteland coach Stacy Meyer said. "This is as well as these boys have played all year." Roncalli beat Howe 81-64 in the first game. Whiteland (8-14) used a zone defense in the first half with the hope of neutralizing Chatard's Tyler Kleinschmidt, who had 14 points at the break and finished with 18. Meyer switched to a man-to-man defense in the second half and limited the Trojans (12-8) to six points in the third quarter. "(Kleinschmidt) is so good at dribble-penetration," Meyer said. "That's why we started out in the zone, and I think we got him standing around a little bit. Adam Money did a terrific job on him (in the second half) and guys were stepping in at the right time." Nick Smither was particularly impressive for Whiteland with 20 points and 11 rebounds. He also had two steals and two assists. Money, who guarded Kleinschmidt for most of the second half, had 15 points, including three crucial free throws and a field goal down the stretch. "It was a different type of game in the second half," Money said. "In the first half we were pumped up, but in the second half we came out pumped up and we played smart and executed." The game between Roncalli and Howe was a high-scoring contest played at a dizzying pace. The only thing the first and second games seemed to have in common was extreme dissatisfaction with the officiating, particularly by the Howe and Chatard coaches. Howe came out with a swarming press and picked up many fouls in the process, including three technical fouls -- two players and the bench. Roncalli, which converted 36-of-47 free throws, led the entire game. "They create chaos," Roncalli coach Michael Wantz said. "They do a nice job. They play to their strengths. I thought we did a nice job of keeping our composure." Paul Corsaro and Bill Perry had 21 points apiece and Joe Britner had 18 for the Rebels. Britner added a team-high nine rebounds and Perry added eight. Larry Stone led Howe with 15 points.
