Teams look to next year
Bishop Chatard coach Kevin Sweeney didn't set a goal to break the school record for victories in each of his first two seasons . . . but he's not going to count out adding a third year, either. "We certainly don't go about it (to set records)," said Sweeney, who led the Trojans to 16 victories and the program's first sectional title in 2004-05 and 19 wins plus a second sectional championship this season. "But you look at the players we have coming back and, if they work as hard as the team did last offseason, we'll have a very good year." Bishop Chatard loses a pair of record-setting seniors in point guard Beth Reed, who set the marks for career steals and assists, and guard Jennifer Seeber, who holds the 3-point field goals made and attempted marks. They were two of the team's three leading scorers, but Sweeney believes he has a core of returning players to continue the tradition they helped establish. Junior Kelly Gardner improved after enduring two knee surgeries and led the team in scoring and rebounding. Her sister, Megan Gardner, will move from small forward, where she often guarded the opponent's top offensive player, to point guard, and defensive-oriented forward Jenny Traub also returns to the starting lineup. Sophomore Anne Boese improved her defense and may threaten Seeber's 3-point marks after providing almost 10 points per game off the bench this season. Juniors Katie Alexander and Maggie Cappel were capable reserves this season and will be expected to increase their roles as seniors.
