Unofficial indoor state meet on tap
Warriors' Pipkin, Trojans' Muskat are among the favorites in Bloomington

Track

Warren Central junior Devin Pipkin and Bishop Chatard sophomore Kate Muskat are among the top seeds for events in the NSR Classic, the unofficial indoor track and field state meet Saturday at Bloomington.
Pipkin, who was second in last spring's 100-meter outdoor state meet, enters the indoor meet with a time of 6.38 seconds in the Class 4A-5A boys 55 dash. Muskat, a regional qualifier last spring, has the fast time of 7.28 in the Class A-3A girls 55.
The event is run in two classes for boys and girls and divided by enrollment sizes like the football tournament. It starts at 11 a.m. and will be at Indiana University's Gladstone Fieldhouse, a venue beside Assembly Hall.
Races are limited to the top 12 in each event in each class based on marks posted at one of nine qualifying meets around the state earlier in the month.
"In the past, we had qualifying at just a couple of sites the weekend before," said Ken Miller, the co-meet director and retired boys track coach at Fort Wayne North. "But by adding more qualifying opportunities, the meet's quality is even better and it probably is the biggest high school meet in the nation as far as total kids (including the qualifiers)."
In addition to the top individuals, area relay teams from Chatard (Class A-3A boys 3,200 and distance medley and girls 800), Franklin Central (4A-5A 3,200 and distance medley), Pike (4A-5A boys 800) and Warren Central (4A-5A boys 1,600) are among top qualifiers.
Miller noted top competition could be in the pole vault, where Homestead's Hunter Hall and Katie Vieth lead respective fields for boys and girls. He added the boys shot put features standouts Eric Werskey of Seymour and Ben Stephen of Union County.

On the move

Larry Leonhardt was hired as volleyball coach and Ben Reilly was named girls soccer coach at Bishop Chatard. Leonhardt has been a Trojans assistant for six years and previously was head coach at Lawrence North. Reilly succeeds Ben Beasley, who accepted the girls soccer coaching job at Fishers.
