Warren Central dominant in state indoor classic

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Although it was no real surprise, the Warren Central boys track team showed it will be a force this season Saturday in the NSR State Indoor Classic.
Returning several top athletes from last season's state runner-up squad, including junior sprinter Devin Pipkin, senior hurdler Joey Hodges and junior distance ace De'Sean Turner, the top-ranked Warriors won five of 11 events in the Class 4A-5A division of the unofficial high school indoor track and field state meet at Indiana University's Gladstein Fieldhouse.
Most impressively, Warren Central claimed blue ribbons in all four relays. That included the quartet of senior Jimmy Hodges, junior Chris Adkins, junior Ondraius Richardson and Turner setting what is believed to be an all-time Indiana record of 10 minutes, 19.52 seconds in the distance medley relay.
The performance came just a week after Jimmy Hodges, senior Tim Armstrong Richardson and Turner won the 4-mile relay at the Nike Indoor Nationals at New York. Pipkin and Joey Hodges also had top-four finishes at the national meet.
"We know we're good and we know we've got talent, but we want to let what we do on the track talk for us," said Turner, who let loose a joyful scream as he finished the medley event that included legs of 1,200, 400, 800 and 1,600 meters. "Now we've pretty much got every indoor record."
Pipkin got the Warriors going by matching his personal best of 6.37 to win the 55 dash. Later, sophomore D'Juan Richardson, junior Marcus Malone, Joey Hodges and Pipkin won the 800 relay in 1:29.26 before Jimmy Hodges, senior Tim Armstrong, Ondraius Richardson and Turner captured the 3,200 relay in 8:01.54.
In the day's final event, senior Korrie Elkins, Adkins, Pipkin and Joey Hodges were timed in 3:23.73 to finish in what officials declared a dead heat with Fort Wayne Northrop. Scott Wims' late burst brought the Bruins even at the finish.
"We won't be hiding after this meet," Warren coach Dennis McNulty said. "But after this meet, we'll go into a serious training phase because you can't hold fast times forever. We'll hope to bring them back down in mid-to-late May."
Among others who excelled were the Lawrence North quartet of Jasmine Starks, McKenzie Baksh, Stacia Weatherford and Marta Scheiwe, who won both the 800 (1:44.51) and 1,600 (4:01.73) relays in the girls 4A-5A division, and the Bishop Chatard foursome of Ebony Robinson, Annie Barnes, Maggie Cappel and Kate Muskat, who captured the same events in the girls A-3A division. The Trojans' times were 1:48.63 and 4:10.02.
Scheiwe was scintillating as she made up a huge deficit to overcome Fort Wayne Northrop in the 800 relay. She then took off with 150 meters to go to shoot past Gary West and win the 1,600 relay.
"I just decided I had to go as fast as I can," Scheiwe said.
Muskat, who anchored the two Chatard relay wins, added to her day by winning the 55 dash (7.27) in the girls A-3A division.
"Our win in the (1,600 relay) was very satisfying because we came in as underdogs," said Muskat, who added a personal-best split in the 800 relay.
Other area winners were Ben Davis' Keenan Hall in the 4A-5A boys long jump (22-63/4), Cathedral's Emily Breslin in the girls 4A-5A high jump (5-6), Danville's Sam Stinson in the boys A-3A 55 hurdles (8.16), Brebeuf Jesuit in the boys A-3A 3,200 relay (8:25.27) and Chatard in the boys A-3A 1,600 relay (3:30.68).
Also of note were Homestead's Hunter Hall and Brownsburg Jeremy Brading, who each went 16-6 in the boys 4A-5A pole vault, Hall winning on fewer misses; Union County's Ben Stephen, who had a mark of 61-21/2 in the boys A-3A shot put; Northridge's Megan Jackson, who won the girls 4A-5A 3,200 in 10:50.38; and Homestead's Katie Veith, who cleared 13-6 in the girls 4A-5A pole vault.
