Ben Davis senior Keenan Hall and the Bishop Chatard 3,200 relay unit didn't mind the wind and rain Thursday night. Between two weather delays that totaled about 90 minutes, Hall and the Trojans' Andrew Poore, Seth Ball, Chris Dietrick and Todd Leone came out flying in the high school boys track regional at North Central. Hall got things started with a regional- and school-record 24 feet, 43/4 inches in the long jump and later added a win in the 300 hurdles to propel the fourth-ranked Giants to 122 points and a team title that won't require any recounts. No. 3 Southport, which won last week's Tech Sectional after a scoring correction, was second with 73 points, followed by No. 9 Lawrence North with 69, No. 8 North Central with 511/3, Pendleton Heights with 50 and Chatard with 49. "I challenged the guys to come out strong, and we had a little extra motivation because of what happened (in the sectional) to prove the kind of team that we are," said Giants coach Mike Davidson, whose squad claimed the program's third regional title and first since back-to-back crowns in 1999 and 2000. "I was really impressed with how our guys stepped up." That started with Hall, whose effort in the long jump eclipsed a 17-year-old school record and a previous regional best of 24-23/4 set by Lawrence North's Marcus Lewis in 2002. Hall's feet actually went about 26 feet, well better than the state-meet record of 24-73/4, but he hit the sand with his derriere. "I felt relaxed and focused, and that's what the long jump is all about," said Hall, who also won the 300 hurdles in 38.31 seconds. "If you press, you're not going to do well. But I felt good." Hall led the charge, but other Giants who claimed blue ribbons were defending state champ Jon Tate in the high jump (6-6), Alandous Briggs in the pole vault (14-6) and Rapheal Williams in the 200 (22.34). The Chatard quartet added to the early excitement with the night's other regional record, 7:45.70 in the long relay. Each of the four later qualified for state individually -- Dietrick and Leone going 1-2 in the 800 (1:56.33 and 1:56.43), Ball kicking from fourth to first in the final 200 meters to win the 1,600 in 4:20.92 and Poore placing third in a fast 3,200 behind the Pendleton Heights duo of Brock Hagerman and Cole Hardacre. "It's was a great night for us," Dietrick said. Hagerman, the reigning cross country state champ, was pleased with his win in 9:17.32, in which he waited until 300 meters to go to surge to the front. "I wanted to save something for state because the main goal here is just to advance," he said. "But I had a good kick and that's good practice for state because it probably will come down to a kick there." Southport's Clayton Wilson also was a double winner, taking the 110 high hurdles in 14.70 and the 400 in 48.67. Lawrence North's Darryl Truitt also was part of two wins, the 100 in 10.98 and a leg on the 400 relay in 42.13. Other winners included Lawrence North's Brandon Pounds in the shot put (57-8), Pendleton Heights' Chris Shaw in the discus (177-9) and the North Central 1,600 relay (3:19.19).
