Beth Reed never stops.
Soccer. Basketball. Softball. Games. Practices. The classroom. The Bishop Chatard High School senior pushed herself and her teams to new heights. As a result, Reed was named The Star's 2006 City Female Athlete of the Year.
"She's just a tremendous athlete and competitor who will find a way to win and help her teammates get better," basketball coach Kevin Sweeney said. "She takes bad breaks and uses them to drive herself and the team that much harder."
Reed is the second consecutive Chatard athlete to win the honor, following Kortney Norris, and the fifth since 1999. Reed, ranked third in her class with a 4.6 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale, will attend the United States Naval Academy and play soccer.
Reed was the goalie for the Trojans, setting school records for saves (240), shutouts (38) and goals against average (0.77) in leading the team to the City Tournament championship in 2004. She was a three-time all-city and two-time all-state selection, and was named an Academic All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
"She epitomizes everything you want as a coach in a player," said Reed's soccer coach, Ben Beasley, who is now at Fishers.
In basketball, Reed set a school record for career assists (304), finished second all time in steals (226) and third in scoring (864 points) as the starting point guard for the first two sectional title teams in Bishop Chatard's history -- teams that twice set the record for victories in a season. She also was a member of two sectional championship softball teams as a shortstop.
"Beth Reed's accomplishments are numbing in this day and age of athletic and academic specialization," athletic director Mike Ford said in an e-mail. "She does not define herself by personal achievements but rather by how her teams have fared. I am heartened to know that our military leadership has Beth Reed as a future officer."
