Joe Holland wobbled to the sideline after a 22-yard run early in the second quarter and threw up. The Bishop Chatard High School star tailback didn't return to Friday's regional championship game during the first half. But it was Mount Vernon that soon felt sick.

The Trojans simply shifted Tyler Kleinschmidt from wingback to fill in for Holland. He finished off the drive with five straight carries for 32 yards, the last 15 on a touchdown run to push the lead to 21 points.

Bishop Chatard ultimately cruised to a 42-14 victory behind Kleinschmidt's 174 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries at the Broad Ripple field.

"Joe had an instance (where he had to) come out, and I had to step in and fill his role," said Kleinschmidt, whose team will play the winner of today's Evansville Mater Dei-Batesville game in the semistate. "Joe's a great back, (but) sometimes I get a chance to get some carries, too. We complement each other very well."

Kleinschmidt set up Chatard's first touchdown with a 46-yard run on third-and-7 from the 50 on a counter play from wingback. Holland took it the final 4 yards on two carries for the 7-0 lead with 7:42 remaining in the first quarter.

On the next possession, Kleinschmidt patiently read his blocks, then burst up the middle for a 55-yard touchdown.

"It's great to share the backfield with Tyler," said Holland, who returned in the second half to finish a 15-carry, 148-yard, two-touchdown performance. "If I'm going to block for him, I know he can spring one at any moment and go 80 yards. It's nice to know there's another explosive back there."

Kleinschmidt fumbled a Mount Vernon punt and Dave Seibel recovered at the Trojans 13. On the next play, quarterback Ryne Weppler hit Todd Miller in the back left corner of the end zone, cutting the deficit to 14-7. It was just the fifth touchdown the Trojans allowed this season when the game was within 41 points.

Mount Vernon (8-5) had success throwing the ball; Weppler completed 16-of-31 passes for 223 yards and two TDs. But Nick Schauff missed 39- and 46-yard field goals in the first half and the Trojans took control.

On the next possession, Holland picked up 31 yards, then went the final 29 into the end zone to make it 21-7 with 87 seconds left in the first quarter. Bishop Chatard (12-1) rushed for 215 yards on 14 carries in the first 12 minutes and, when Holland went out in the second quarter, Kleinschmidt took over.

"(Kleinschmidt) gets better all the time," Bishop Chatard coach Vince Lorenzano said. "He's a guy, with a few more pounds on him, he's a Division I player. He's quick. He's fast up the hole. And he's a great kid, great attitude.

"Mike McGinley coaches the running backs (and) rotates those guys in. . . . It's always nice to be a coach at a position with the quality of those kids."
