All-North 2006 Football Player of the Year
Chatard's Holland has turned nervousness to confidence

On the field, Joe Holland is decisive and explosive.
In his mind, however, the Bishop Chatard High School tailback was uncertain and tentative. Holland rushed for nearly 1,000 yards after moving from linebacker as a sophomore for one of Indiana's most storied programs, but it wasn't until he was deep into a 2,000-yard junior year that he felt confident and comfortable on the field.
It's that combination of talent and quest for improvement that produced a great player and leader and earned Holland the North Player of the Year Award.
"I was even nervous coming into freshman football. I had no idea what kind of impact I would make," he said.
"I thought it was a huge privilege to be a part of the defense (at outside linebacker) as a sophomore, and I made the most of every moment out there because I knew how lucky I was to be in a position to start on a team like that."
Bishop Chatard was just as lucky.
When tailback Dray Mason was injured that season, Holland moved to tailback and rushed for 973 yards and 11 touchdowns for a team that reached semistates.
He rushed for 2,257 yards and 32 touchdowns last season on the Class 3A runner-up and added 2,040 and 35 more scores in leading the Trojans to this year's state title. Holland scored Bishop Chatard's only touchdown on a 20-yard, fourth-down run in the 7-0 victory over Norwell.
"He's an outstanding young man," coach Vince Lorenzano said of the program's all-time leading rusher with 5,270 yards.
"He's a great student. A great role model. He represents the kids that are highly skilled and talented, but he also can work with kids that are not as athletic. It's unusual he's able to transcend all that, and it made him a great leader."
Holland, who has orally committed to Purdue University, where he'll move to the defensive backfield, leads the 31-player North Honor Team. There was a wealth of talent to choose from, as the area produced three state champions -- Bishop Chatard, Cathedral and Sheridan -- and a state runner-up in Carmel.
Carmel's Mo Moriarity was selected the North Coach of the Year after leading the Greyhounds to their first state title appearance since 1989.
Those honored were chosen based on a vote by area coaches with input from The Star's sports staff.
