Bishop Chatard's Kelly Gardner suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee for the second time in her career in Thursday's 55-48 victory over Arlington in the City Tournament semifinals. The injury is expected to end her season and could threaten her career. She had the same injury on the same date two years ago in the City Tournament and suffered a torn ACL in her right knee as a freshman. "I feel horrible for Kelly," said coach Kevin Sweeney. "She's a tremendous leader and a tremendous person. If anyone can handle this and bounce back, it's Kelly Gardner." Gardner drew a charge with 6:35 remaining and her team trailing 46-43, then limped off the court. She returned wearing a knee brace with about three minutes to play and the Trojans leading by three points, drew a charge, hit two of four free throws and scored in the post to clinch the victory. Gardner, who has committed to Davidson University, led Class 3A No. 9 Bishop Chatard in scoring (20.8 points per game), rebounding (9.0) and steals (3.4). "We're going to carry on," Sweeney said. "We've got a lot of winners in our locker room. We're not going to make excuses. We'll find solutions and carry on. We've had two good days of practice. We've discussed how roles will change, and it will be very little. Everybody needs to get a point or two more and an extra rebound here or there. "We handled this two years ago. This team handles adversity very well."
