Despite having only one double-figure scorer, Bishop Chatard defeated Jasper 50-46 to win the Marion Tournament championship Saturday.

Both teams played an evenly matched first half, as the Trojans (5-1) led 18-17 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Kennedy, the tournament MVP, put Bishop Chatard (5-1) ahead for good with a 3-pointer. The Trojans ended the quarter leading by six points and held on in the fourth.

Tyler Kleinschmidt added nine points and six rebounds for the Trojans, while Matt Keusch and Andy Knies each scored 13 for Jasper (5-4).

Bishop Chatard's record after six games is its best start since the 2002-03 season, when the Trojans began the year by winning their first nine games. They eventually finished the season 22-3 and won the Class 3A championship by defeating Fort Wayne Elmhurst.

The Trojans next play Friday at Guerin Catholic.

In the consolation game of the Marion Tournament, Class 4A No. 4 Marion (6-2) defeated Avon (4-5) 74-48.

With the score knotted at 45-45, Tyler Kleinschmidt sank 1-of-2 free throws to guide the Trojans (4-1) past the Orioles (4-4).

Twins Billy and Jimmy Kennedy led Bishop Chatard with 11 points apiece. Kleinschmidt finished with 10.

Avon's Kevin Dill scored a game-high 12 points and teammate Mark Krenzke had 10. The Orioles turned over the ball following Kleinschmidt's free throw, and Billy Kennedy added two free throws with one second to play for the final margin.
