Last-second win may pay off later
Victory boosted confidence, will help in tournament, predicts Chatard coach Kevin Sweeney

When the state tournament rolls around in February, Bishop Chatard coach Kevin Sweeney believes Friday night's victory might end up making a difference for the Trojans. Tied 50-50 with McCutcheon in the finals of the Rumble on the River at Hanover, Chatard junior Anne Boese came up with a steal and hit a jumper with four seconds to go to give her team a 52-50 win. The victory was the third in two days for the Trojans (11-2). "We were down late in the game by four points, but we scrapped and were able to hang around," Sweeney said. "We were able to do the things we needed to do to pull out the game. It's one of those games that's going to help our confidence if we get in that situation again." Sweeney said the Class 3A No. 6 Trojans, who also downed North Harrison and Franklin County in the tournament, are starting to adapt to the loss of leading scorer Kelly Gardner, who is out for the season with an injury. "We're still redefining our roles after losing Kelly," Sweeney said. "But by the second half of the second game (of the tournament), we started to figure out who we were. The girls started knowing what to expect of each other. They kept fighting, scrapping and playing hard."
