In recent seasons, coach Mike Harmon has been disappointed that his players haven't had the same high expectations as the school's perennial state title-contending football program.
But after letting a four-run lead slip away in sectionals to a Whiteland team that reached the semistate finals last year, he's seen a change in attitude.
"Last year was an eye-opener (for the players)," Harmon said.
"Whiteland went to the Final Four. New Palestine played for the state championship the two previous years. We know if we get out of the Indianapolis area, we can contend for the championship. It's not easy, but you're going to play as good a competition as there is."
Scott Mourey is back at catcher for the third year after hitting .393, and first baseman John Dury (.355, team-high 4 home runs) also starts his third varsity season.
The class also includes pitcher/outfielder Rob Doyle and pitcher/second baseman Billy White. Hunter Groves, a transfer from North Central, is expected to start at shortstop.
Sophomore Collin Akin will return at third base after taking over the position for the final 15 games last season, and the senior class includes pitcher/catcher Caleb Decker and returning outfielder Jeremy Bolt.
The team's primary concern is pitching. Eight players can pitch, but no one established himself as the No. 2 starter last season. White has the most experience, but Harmon also will look at Akin, Decker, Decker and junior Michael Zimmerman.
