City Track and Field Championships
Individual showings rule evening
Miller leads Cathedral boys to title; Chatard girls score 175 points for victory

It was an evening for individuals to shine Wednesday at the Tech High School track. With weather conditions ideal following an early-afternoon rain, seniors Andrew Poore of Bishop Chatard, Glenn Miller of Cathedral and Kendal Downing of Howe were the standout performers in the City Track and Field Championships.
Poore and Miller each won two events and set a meet record, while Downing captured three championships in the 74th annual boys meet in which Cathedral used strong depth to claim its second consecutive team title with 135 points. In the 36th annual girls competition, No. 18 Bishop Chatard was led by senior Ebony Robinson, freshman Christine Kirby, senior Kelly Gardner and sophomore Alex Metzger to amass 175 points en route to its third straight crown. Poore delivered the top performance, winning the boys 800- and 1,600-meter races in 1 minute, 59.04 seconds and 4:14.82. The latter time broke the 29-year-old meet record of 4:18.60 set by Chatard graduate James Murphy, a feat made more impressive considering the 1,600 is Poore's second event. His primary event is the 3,200, but he didn't run that Wednesday, instead going for the fast 1,600 as a final training run for the state tournament series that begins with sectionals next week. "This mile shows I'm where I want to be for the 3,200 next week," said Poore, who won last year's City 1,600 and 3,200. "That's been my goal all season, to run my first mile quick but as easy as possible. The competition will be so tough (in the state 3,200), with five to 10 guys all capable of winning." Chatard coach Dan Kinghorn lists Poore as a top contender in the 3,200, and Poore also will run either the 1,600 or a leg on the 3,200 relay. But coach and athlete are undecided about which. "With him on it, our 4x8 is one of the top three or four in the state," Kinghorn said. Miller led a pair of sweeps in the hurdles races. First, he and classmate Korey Newman went 1-2 in the 110 highs in times of 14.88 and 15.04. Later, Miller set a meet record of 40.34 in the 300 hurdles -- his secondary event, too -- while sophomore teammate Allen Richardson was runner-up in 40.95. "Glenn hadn't run the 300 hurdles for 21/2 years until two weeks ago," Irish coach Tom Gallagher said. "He ran it in the All-Catholic Meet to be a team guy. But while he's been great all year and has the potential to go to state in the high hurdles, he now may be able to qualify (for state) in both." Downing was nearly a one-man show for Howe, scoring 30 of its 36 points with wins in the 100 (11.12), 400 (49.10) and long jump (20 feet, 10 inches). He became a repeat champion in the last two events, holding off Manual senior Tony Duerson in the 400 to cap his day. "I don't know what to feel," Downing said. "I didn't think I was prepared for this meet." Duerson made up for his loss in the 400 by providing the meet's most thrilling win, posting a 48.1 anchor split to rally Manual past a Chatard quartet in the 1,600 relay. "The whole way I was thinking, 'Go get 'em,' " said Duerson, who was joined by Jeremias Hooks, Cletus Burton and Ulen Laland in a 3:28.48 clocking. The Chatard girls showed a similar attitude with Robinson -- who won the 100 in 12.58 and joined with freshman Marianne Holland, senior Annie Barnes and Kirby on the 1,600 relay that prevailed in 4:04.14 -- displaying it with a tattoo on her right shoulder. "Attack the track," it said, the words surrounding a winged cleat. Robinson also teamed with Kourtney Crawford, Paige Laconi and Natalie DiSalvo on the winning 400 relay (50.20), while Kirby also captured the 800 in 2:20.16 and Gardner was a twin winner in the shot put (40-3) and discus (113-1). Sophomore Carly Sobolewski won the 3,200 in 11:33.48 and Metzger won the pole vault in a meet record 9-6, putting at least a share of two records in the same household. Metzger's brother, Nick, is co-holder of the boys City vault mark at 13-6. "This was a total team effort," Kinghorn said, noting that junior sprint star Kate Muskat didn't run because she is nursing a hamstring injury. Also of note, Cathedral senior Emily Breslin cleared 5-6 to win the high jump for the fourth consecutive year while Irish sophomore Katy Achtien was timed in 5:15.76 in the 1,600, just .73 off the meet record. Other girls repeat winners were Cathedral junior Heather Barton in the 300 hurdles (47.29) and Covenant Christian junior Jordan Fisher in the 100 hurdles (15.97).
