Bishop Chatard High School football coach Vince Lorenzano described Joe Holland as a superstar who is not a superstar. By that, Lorenzano meant Holland, who has been selected The Star's 2007 City Male Athlete of Year, has superstar talent without superstar attitude. "Joe's one of those guys who comes along once every 20 years or so," Lorenzano said. "The thing that impressed me most about him is how he did so many things in school, in academic areas and multiple sports and activities. It's great to have a kid like that around because he impacts others in such a good way without separating himself." On the field, Holland set a school record with 5,265 career rushing yards and added 81 career touchdowns (74 rushing, four receiving and three on returns) while helping Chatard to a 37-7 record as a three-year starter at running back. The Purdue recruit scored the winning TD in last fall's Class 3A football state championship game. He was a two-time Super Team selection, a two-time all-state selection and a finalist in the 2006 Mr. Football program. In basketball, the 6-2, 207-pounder was a three-year regular who averaged about four points and three rebounds while typically defending the opponent's top player. In track and field, Holland -- who carried a 4.33 grade-point average -- was a key member of City championship squads as a freshman and sophomore. "There's no question that he made big plays for us, but the biggest thing was when we asked him to do hard things, he did them," Lorenzano said. "Sometimes marquee players don't want to do everything you ask them to do. It's so easy to coach a kid like him."
