Coat of Arms and School Motto:
The school coat of arms is based on symbols that are pertinent to the life of Bishop Silas Chatard. The fleur-de-lis in the top left quadrant symbolizes his family's French heritage. The caduceus (medical symbol) recalls that Chatard was a medical doctor, as were his father and grandfather, before he entered the seminary. The scroll and quill are symbols of education as Chatard was first a teacher and then director of the North American College seminary in Rome. Finally, the fish and trident are symbols of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Chatard was responsible for moving the see headquarters of the diocese - from Vincennes to Indianapolis. The school motto, FESTINA LENTE, is Latin for Saint Paul's plea: "Make haste, slowly" meaning that we hurry to join our Lord, but we take the time to live our lives well.
