Deferred or planned gifts - including bequests, life-income plans, life insurance, and other options
for your estate - help you - while helping Bishop Chatard. Your desire to leave a legacy by making an
ultimate gift to Bishop Chatard High School, is a commitment to the future of Bishop Chatard, while
increasing your income and earning valuable income tax deductions.
Gifts of real estate and personal property offer a wide variety of tax and other benefits. If you
own property on which the value has appreciated so that it generates long term capital gain if
sold, it is generally better to donate the property to the school rather than sell it and donate the
proceeds. Consult your attorney or tax advisor to find out what is best for your situation.
The most common type of planned gift is a bequest, a provision in your will for a gift to the
school. A charitable bequest is fully deductible from your estate and can significantly reduce
estate taxes on the balance of your estate. Your bequest to Bishop Chatard can take the form of a
specific bequest, cash or securities, real estate or other property. It can also take the form of a
percentage of your total estate.
A gift of whole life insurance can be made to the school by naming the school as the irrevocable
owner and beneficiary of the policy.
