Themes in Literature, a course based on Indiana’s Academic Standards for English/Language Arts, is a study of universal themes, such as the journey of the hero, the trials of youth, the search for identity, and other themes appropriate to the level and interests of students. Students will examine sports-based literature of representative works in various genres by authors of diverse eras and nationalities and the way themes may be treated differently in the works because of the cultural context. Students analyze how themes illuminate humanity’s struggle to understand the human condition. Students write a variety of types of compositions with a focus on narratives, reflective compositions, academic essays, and responses to literature.
