Congratulations to Bishop Chatard Senior Amani Gates, one of 20 local high school students honored this year by the Kiwanis Club of Indianapolis Abe Lincoln Scholarship Award Program. Amani was named a Circle of Valor Award recipient.
The Abe Lincoln Awards recognize high school students who have faced daunting obstacles ranging from disease and disability to dire family environments. Amani was diagnosed with pediatric bone cancer when she was 13. She worked hard and took initiative to keep up with school work and remain enthusiastic. Now in remission for four years, she is an advocate for others battling the disease and is preparing for college.
