Academic WorldQuest: BCHS competes on Feb. 23

The Indiana Council on World Affairs announces the student teams and their leaders participating in the 2019 Indiana Academic WorldQuest held on February 23 at U. of Indianapolis:

  • Eman School, Fishers – Mia Sankari
  • Legacy Learning Center – Huma Soomro and Rezoan
  • Warren Central High School – Nicholas R. Salemi

Academic WorldQuest, a nationwide World Affairs Councils of America (WACA) youth education program, provides a well-researched curriculum designed to strengthen high school students’ critical thinking skills on current, complex matters of international politics, geography, global economics, history, and world cultures. In it’s 15th year in Indiana, the event is a quizzo-style competition which tests students’ knowledge of global politics, geography, international economics, history, and world cultures with 100 questions on 10 topics (View the study guide).

The Indiana Council on World Affairs finances the top scoring team’s trip to Washington, DC for the national competition on April 26-27, 2019.

The team placed 10th in the competition.

This past Saturday, a handful of BCHS students participated in competing and discussing their knowledge of international affairs, formally known as WorldQuest. Students are a part of four-person teams that answer 100 multiple choice questions from 10 varying topics about the world affairs throughout history. This years categories included:
1. Country in Focus: Qatar
2. How to Deal with North Korea
3. Global Refugee and Migration Crisis
4. #WeAreNATO – The Alliance at 70
5. Great Decisions
6. Japan-U.S. Relations
7. Space Policy
8. World Trade Organization (WTO)
9. Bridging Divides to Bring Peace
10. Current Events

About 4000 students all across the nation participate in local competitions hosted by World Affair Councils in hopes of being one of the 200 students to advance to the final competition at the nation’s capital of Washington, DC. “This was our first time at WorldQuest, so we were trying to figure out how exactly the competition went and what to know for future years,” said junior participant Jillian Hurley. The BCHS team (Nora Barth, Jillian Hurley, Aidan Kramer, Caroline Thompson and Grace Timpe) placed 10th place overall at the local competition at University of Indianapolis.
